Michigan Teacher's Bill of Rights

Michigan classrooms exist to educate students, and teachers are the means to educational instruction in the classroom. In order to emphasize student success, we must restore instructional focus within the classrooms. This requires safe, neutral, orderly learning environments where educators are supported, students are protected, and parents remain the primary partners in their children's education.

Every Michigan educator deserves the right to:

  1. A Safe Classroom
Teach in a classroom environment where learning can thrive.

  2. Professional Respect
Be treated with dignity by fellow staff and administrators.

  3. Academic Integrity
Teach Michigan's approved curriculum with professionalism and integrity while being fairly supported.

  4. Parental Partnership
Work alongside parents as partners in every child's education.

  5. Time to Teach
Spend the majority of the school day teaching rather than excessive paperwork and administrative burdens.

  6. Adequate Planning Time
Have sufficient uninterrupted planning time during the contracted workday to prepare lessons, collaborate, and complete required responsibilities.

  7. Fair Compensation for Required Work
Be fairly compensated for duties required that must be completed out of contracted hours.

  8. Fair Evaluations
Be evaluated honestly, consistently, and professionally without bias, discrimination or favoritism towards others.

  9. Protection from Violence and Harassment
Work in a school where threats and violence are addressed promptly and consequences for violating boundaries are enforced.

  10. Administrative Support
Receive consistent support in maintaining classroom expectations so every student has the opportunity to learn.
